Comfort by Companionship

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 15, 2023

Today’s Text: 2 Kings 4:8-17

Key Verses: 2 Kings 4:13 (ESV): “And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.”No one is sufficient by himself. We all need one another to survive life’s consequences. This is the way our whole world is held together. Nothing stands perfectly alone. Even the distant planets in their orbits depend on powers, emissions and resources from other planets to exhibit their different powers and glory. There is a double edged lesson of relationship and fellowship for us to learn from today’s meditation. First, no man is without his own field of influence, no matter how needy he is. We all have people in our lives that listen to our voice. We must therefore be ready to be willing echoes of the needs of others within our field of influence. When we are placed in anyone’s life, it might be to help shape their destiny simply by speaking up for them. The prophet perceives this need and was happy to do it for his benefactor.

The second lesson is revealed by the Shunammite's testimony to the character of her people. Unfortunately, today’s realities rather separate us from our friends and family so that we are not as confident to speak like the Shunammite. We don’t dwell among our people anymore. Communal spirit and neighborliness is almost totally destroyed. We have a common regrettable saying: You are on your own (OYO). Or, instead of such comfort of dwelling among our people, we fear that each of those we could so trust are seeking to exercise their own ambitions, power, or other sort of selfish influence and interest over us. But this principle of the blessing of association runs throughout the Bible. “He who walks with wise men will be wise” (Prov 13:20) Laban testified to Jacob: “the Lord has blessed me for your sake” (Gen 30:27) Rahab’s association with the spies brought comfort and salvation to her family. Joseph’s company with Potiphar and Pharaoh blessed the household and entire nation respectively.

Quote for the Day: “Nothing and no man is created to be by himself. Even distant planets in their orbits depend on powers, emissions and resources from other planets to exhibit their different powers and glory." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please teach us the secret confort and the blessings we miss for not loving one another and standing together. Teach us why it is not good for man to be alone — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
