Comfort in the Valley

Today’s Text: Psalm 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalm 23:4 (ESV): “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

No matter where we are in our life’s journey, or no matter how down we feel in the maze of things; God’s love never lets go of us. The Psalmist understands this dimension of God’s intimacy with us, His children. He paints the symbolic image that best represents this truth. As a shepherd, he (David) understands the depth of concern and compassion he always has for his sheep. He understands why he needs the rod and just what they represent. And he know just what the staff is used for. And he pictures God’s shepherding off even better and clearer light.

The rod is the symbol of authority, power, discipline and defense of the sheep. These are assured benefits of God for his sheep fold. With the rod of His word, He chastises us when we stray; and by the same rod, He defends us from the evil ones. In the same way, by His staff, we are guided toward the right direction. God always leads His own to the way of eternal life. The staff is a long, slender stick, often with a bent hook on one end — and with it, the shepherd brings out sheep that fall into ditches. By the power of Christ’s cross, we are saved from the destruction of hell.

David did not take these blessings lightly. He celebrates the comfort no matter how thick the valley of the shadows of death may be. He fears no evil. He knows that the Lord is always with him. Are you, like him, under the fearful shadow of death? Why not draw new strength today from the protective and delivering comfort that our good great Shepherd's rod and staff bring?! Cling to God's rod and let it always remind you of His authority over all dominions and powers. Be comforted that His scepter never departs from Judah; and He, by it, always helps us stay on the path, or get us back to the path of righteousness—because of His name—hallelujah!

Quote for the Day: “Crocked, slender or rugged, weak men find strength when they lean on their staff. Believers draw huge strength and comfort from God’s scepter of power.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please strengthen my faith so that I too may find rest and comfort when we lean on your word. Teach me to lean on it a weak men lean on their staff each day and each step of the way—in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
