Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, March 4, 2021
Today’s Text: Luke 12:22-31
Key Verse: Luke 12:24 (ESV) — “Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!"
We have learnt so much from the story of Cherith. We have shared his raven’s testimony, and we love it. It is now time to turn from Elijah, and the Brook, and learn from the ravens. And it so fun that we can turn to the New Testament and learn what Jesus says about these creatures called ravens. The main enemies we need to deal with in our lives so that we too can walk with God — in Elijah's kind of trustful reliance on God — is anxiety. The problem of anxiety is a major universal issue of all time. The poor worry about what to eat, what to wear and where to sleep; and the rich are cumbered with gratifying self-indulgence. But God has a lesson for everyone as we focus the ravens. During the days of Jesus Christ, our Lord told a parable about a rich fool to the multitude, and when they were dismissed, He breaks it down in a different way with His disciples. He started warning them against anxiety.
Why do we lay up treasure for ourselves? Why do we abandon simple acts of obedient faith and rather chose ways of torturing cares of life? Like the story of Elijah, today’s passage teaches us that if ravens can, we too can trust God for all things. Those ravens are only used to teach us to eschew anxious care, and to rather set our affections on true treasure. By “the ravens neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn; it is God who feeds them” we learn that they are not a species bursting with plenty. They are salvage birds with concerns on how to find food and clothing, yet they would not worry about themselves. They rather chose Cherith to provide first for God’s purpose. In today’s text, our Lord wants us to give up our self-consuming care, and learn the care-less faith-full temper of/from the ravens. If God can feed raven s who are ‘unclean’ birds, how much will he take care of us who are of superior value.
Quote for the Day: “Every Christian learns from ravens. They teach us that, depending on God, we can enjoy divine provision in due season.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for your comforting assurance that I’m valued more than things. Please teach me to place my values on You rather than things, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
