Today’s Text: Matthew 6:9-15
Key Verse: Matthew 6:11 (ESV): “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Our lives have been bundled up in an insatiable lifestyle so much that no matter what we receive or acquire, we are naturally never happy with it. If we have a thing, we wonder why can’t have another. When the other which we covet comes, we still wonder if that is all there is to get. That is the way we have been since the Fall. However the key lesson from our key text is simple: to be happy, we do not necessarily need to get it all. If all we are given is our daily bread, contentment is what God requires from us.
The pattern or model of the Lord’s Prayer indicates that Jesus intends that our personal wants or needs are subordinate and secondary to the will of God. The prayer teaches our dependence upon God, as well as a sense of satisfaction with what He gives us of our bodily wants or needs. A call for daily bread is a satisfying plea of sufficiency and not a superabundance. Jesus set us an example of a guided desire rather than that of unneedful anxiety. He knows we have the future to provide for, but He wants us to take no thoughts for the future. Not as if God cannot supply our needs to all eternity. But He wants us to learn the discipline of daily trust and dependence. When certain Israel gathered more than sufficient for the day, they gathered maggots. The Lord is teaching us to live a life of contentment.
Quote for the Day: “Give us this day our daily shows a bidirectional trust: a trust in God alone as the sufficient giver of bread; and a trust in the bread that He gives as sufficient for the day." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, strengthen my faith, and help me live content of whatever you do and give, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
