Dare to Be a Lydia
Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Wednesday, October 28, 2026
Today's Text: Acts 16:14-15
Key Verse: Acts 16:14 (KJV) - "And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul."

By a riverside outside Philippi, a major Roman colony in Macedonia, where the Apostle Paul and his companions - following the famous "Macedonian vision" - went looking for a place of prayer because the city lacked a full Jewish synagogue. There they met Lydia, an independent and wealthy businesswoman, a Gentile drawn to the Jewish faith, from Thyatira who traded in expensive purple cloth and was a "God-fearer." Her business gives insight to her personality. Purple was not common cloth; it was luxury, royalty, wealth. It meant she was a woman of means, influence, and business acumen in a man's world. She was already a worshipper of God, but she did not yet know Christ. And Luke records a profound mystery: whose heart the Lord opened. Not Paul's eloquence, but the Lord's operation. Religion had taught her to worship afar, but only grace through the gospel opens man's heart to attend, to believe, and to respond immediately. When the Lord opens a heart, delay disappears. God is still looking for hearts that will open and homes that will open after. Dare to be Lydia.
Lydia teaches us that an open heart leads to open obedience. The Bible says she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul, and when she was baptized, and her household. There was no negotiation, no postponement. A businesswoman who weighed profit and loss daily did not count baptism as a loss. She and her household were baptized at once. Many today hear the Word, are moved, but postpone obedience. Lydia shows that true hearing produces immediate doing. Her heart was opened, so her life was opened. She did not say, let me first finish this contract or grow my business; she said, I belong to Jesus now. And she brought her household with her. Her faith was not private; it was influential. Dare to be Lydia, who does not just hear the Word with interest but attends to it with immediate obedience and carries her household along.
Her conversion did not end at the water; it moved to her house. She besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. Lydia is the first recorded European convert, and her home became the first church in Europe. A businesswoman's house became a mission base. She understood that salvation brings hospitality, and hospitality becomes ministry. She did not offer her spare room; she offered her home. She did not invite casually; she constrained them. Her business sold purple for kings, but her home now hosted the King of kings. Many are open-hearted but close-homed. Lydia was both. She used her resources, her influence, and her space to advance the gospel. Dare to be Lydia, whose home is not just for living but for lodging the purposes of God.
Notice what God did through one open-hearted woman. Paul and his team had been forbidden to go into Asia and Bithynia. God wanted them in Macedonia. And waiting by that riverside was Lydia, prepared, positioned, and ready. Her open heart became the doorway to a continent. Europe was reached because one businesswoman opened her heart and then opened her house. God did not look for a synagogue leader; He looked for a seeking woman whose heart He could open. Your business, your career, your home can become a hub for revival if your heart stays open to God. You do not need a pulpit to make impact; you need an open heart and an open house. Dare to be like Lydia: a woman whose heart the Lord opened, who obeyed immediately, and whose hospitality hosted a move of God that outlived her generation.
Action Steps: Take ten minutes today to ask God to open your heart again. Where have you become dull, delayed, or distracted from His Word? Like Lydia, attend unto the things spoken and obey immediately. Open your Bible and respond at once. Then open your home, your resources, your table for the gospel. Invite someone in, host a small fellowship, use your business platform to advance Christ. Do not keep your conversion private; let your household and your world see that you are faithful to the Lord.
Quote for the Day: "When the Lord opens a heart, obedience becomes immediate, and a house becomes a church." - Simon Olatunji (#quotablequotes)
Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Lydia, whose heart You opened. Today I ask, Lord, open my heart again that I may attend unto Your Word and obey without delay. Forgive me for hearing and postponing, for worshiping without surrender. I give You my heart, my house, my business, and my household. Let my home be a hub for Your presence and my life be a witness of faithfulness. Make me faithful like Lydia, open-hearted, quick to obey, and generous in hospitality. Let my obedience open a door for my family and my generation. In Jesus' most glorious name. Amen.
