Dare to Be a Phoebe
Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026
Today's Text: Romans 16:1-2
Key Verses: Romans 16:1 (KJV) - "I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchreae."

For a second time, the Holy Spirit is bring back the portrait od Phoebe. She lived in a time when women were often overlooked, God strategically raised and positioned her at the seaport town of Cenchreae where her life became exemplary. Her name was Phoebe. Paul does not call her a church member; he calls her our sister, a diakonos of the church at Cenchreae. The word diakonos means servant, deacon, minister - one who serves with authority and trust. She was also a trusted messenger who carried Paul's greatest letter, the epistle to the Romans, from Corinth to Rome - a dangerous journey by land and sea. And she was a succourer, a benefactor, a patron who stood by many, including Paul himself. She had means, but she used her means for mission. She had influence, but she spent it to advance the gospel. God is still looking for reliable vessels. Dare to be Phoebe.
Phoebe teaches us that faithfulness is what makes you trustworthy. Paul could have sent any brother, but he entrusted Romans, the deepest revelation of justification, righteousness, and grace, into the hands of a sister. Why? Because she had proved herself. She was first a servant at Cenchreae before she became a messenger to Rome. Many want to carry a great letter before they have served in a small harbor. Phoebe did not start in Rome; she started in Cenchreae, a little port town few celebrated. She served the church there, washed feet, helped saints, hosted believers, and supported the work quietly. And because she was faithful in a little port, she was trusted with a letter that would shape the world. Dare to be Phoebe, who is faithful where you are, so God can trust you with more.
Her life also shows that true ministry is succouring - standing under to lift others. Paul says she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. The Greek word is prostatis, meaning patron, protector, one who stands before others to defend and provide. Phoebe used her house, her money, her time, and her strength to stand by people who could not stand alone. Paul himself, the great apostle, at some point needed her help and she did not turn away. The Church needs more than preachers; it needs succourers. People who open their homes, who give generously, who stand up for ministers, who assist saints in whatsoever business they have need of. Influence is not for self-promotion; it is for succour. Dare to be Phoebe, who does not just receive ministry but becomes a ministry of help to others.
Notice what Paul asks the Roman church to do for her - receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of. Phoebe had spent her life assisting others; now heaven made others assist her. When you live as a succourer, God raises succourers for you. She carried the letter, but the letter carried her name into eternity. While many great men in Rome are forgotten, Phoebe is still remembered because she delivered the gospel. Only two verses mention her, but those two verses have outlived empires. God does not measure impact by how long you live, but by how faithfully you serve and how willingly you deliver what is entrusted to you. Dare to be a Phoebe: a sister, a servant, a succourer, and a trusted messenger who delivers the message intact.
Action Steps: Take ten minutes today to serve like Phoebe. Identify one person or one minister you can succour this week with encouragement, money, hospitality, or practical help. Be a sister or brother in Cenchreae before you ask for a platform in Rome. Be faithful with a small assignment in your local church, and carry whatever letter, message, or task God has entrusted to you with integrity. Refuse to use your influence for yourself. Choose to be a servant, a helper, and a trustworthy messenger.
Quote for the Day: "A life that succours many will never lack succour; God ensures that those who carry His letter will have their names preserved in His story." - (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)
Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Phoebe, Your daughter who served faithfully and succoured many. Forgive me for seeking greatness without servanthood, and platform without faithfulness. Today I choose to be like Phoebe. Make me a true diakonos in my local church, a succourer of many, and a trustworthy messenger of Your gospel. Let me use my resources, my home, and my influence for Your glory. Let me serve in Cenchreae with the same faithfulness as if I were in Rome. Let my life lift others, and let my service be worthy of commendation. In Jesus' most glorious name. Amen.
