Devote Yourselves to Prayer

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Wednesday, June 17, 2026

Text: Colossians 4:2-6; John 16:24

Key Verse: “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.” — Colossians 4:2 (ESV)

Today’s threshing calls us to a prayer life that is steady, alert, and overflowing with gratitude. In Colossians 4, Paul is not merely recommending prayer as one spiritual activity among many; he is commanding the church to devote itself to it, to persist in it, and to remain spiritually awake while doing it. This is not casual devotion, but disciplined dependence on God, because prayer is the believer’s lifeline, the church’s power source, and the place where spiritual clarity is formed.

The context matters: Paul is writing from prison, yet his concern is not self-pity but spiritual fruitfulness. He asks the believers to pray that God would open a door for the word, showing that prayer is directly connected to gospel advance, ministry effectiveness, and bold witness. Then the Lord Jesus gives us this promise: “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:24). This means God does not merely want us to pray occasionally; He wants us to ask until our joy is full, because fullness of joy is often found on the far side of faithful asking.

Brethren, prayer is not wasted effort, and unanswered impatience is not the same as fruitless devotion. Many believers pray too little, too quickly, and too shallowly, then wonder why their joy remains thin and their burdens remain heavy. But Scripturep teaches us to continue steadfastly, to keep watching, and to keep thanking God while we wait. When prayer becomes your habit, your heart becomes stronger, your discernment sharper, and your joy deeper.

What must we take home from this truth? Devotion to prayer is devotion to God Himself. The believer who continues in prayer learns to live in expectation, not anxiety; in thanksgiving, not complaint; in dependence, not self-reliance. And because God invites us to ask in Jesus’ name until our joy is full, we do not quit praying when the answer seems delayed. We pray until heaven opens, grace responds, and joy overflows.

Action Steps: Today, set apart a specific time to pray without rushing. Pray with watchfulness, thanksgiving, and confidence in Jesus’ name. Ask God for open doors, spiritual clarity, and fullness of joy in your life. Refuse prayerlessness, and return to a steady rhythm of communion with the Lord.

Quote for the Day: “Prayer is not a spare-wheel for desperate moments; it is the believer’s daily devotion until joy is full.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)

Let Us Pray: Lord, teach me to continue steadfastly in prayer with watchfulness and thanksgiving. Deliver me from prayerlessness, distraction, and shallow devotion. Open doors for Your word in my life and through my life, and train my heart to ask until my joy is full. Let my prayers become a place of communion, power, and overflowing joy. — in Jesus’ most glorious name. Amen.
