Doing the Most Good

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, August 25, 2021

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 11:2 (KJV): “Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.”

There is little or no doubt that the preacher intends this admonition to encourage God's people to be compassionate and benevolent to other people. Matter of fact, no better example of Christlikeness may be demonstrated except we all learn to do the most good wherever we go. We are told how Jesus went about doing good, curing the sick, restoring the sight of the blind, making the lame walk, raising the dead back to life, feeding the hungry, and driving away demons from possessed people even as he also preached and enacted the coming of the Kingdom of God. We also must not do less. D. Thomas opined that “sympathy is as natural to man as selfishness, although the love of self is too often allowed by our sinful nature to overcome the love of others.” But the charge to give a portion to seven and another to eight is a call to shun the selfish call and let the spirit of Christ arouse the dormant nature that seeks the opportunity to do the most good for the most part.

I once read the story of two old Americans that met in a restaurant. One came up from another table and said to the other: “You’re Mr. Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk and was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.” “Yes, I am. I ejected by a parachute and thank God I'm alive today.” He replied. Then the man told him: “I packed your parachute.” Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The had a warm embrace as the man said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” We are all products and debtors of one kindness or the other. We are in that place, position or privilege today because someone did us some good. Regardless of our ranks or hierarchy, we all need someone somewhere to pack our parachute. We must therefore yield God's call to be kind and compassionate to those we know or do not know. We may or may not meet them; they may or may not thank us; but we are told and are sure that we should reap the benefits after many days.

Quote for the Day: “Each believer’s kind cast of his bread; and gift of his portion makes a vital part of the overall good needed by someone somewhere to live another day to bless another man.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please keep me from pettiness; let me be large in my heart, in my word, and in my deed. Help me to be loving, kind, and do the most good, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
