Don’t Be Rash

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, January 23, 2023

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 5:1-12

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 5:2 (NLT): “Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.”

By nature, we often give way to spontaneity in our lives. We act at some sudden motion of our hearts and let our lips break out before we actually weigh our words. We are often quick to offer advice, words, responses, promises or even take actions before we think. But this scripture admonishes us to process our thoughts before we speak, whether they are spoken for or to God, or to other men. We are cautioned to think deeply before we offer our vows to God or men.

While this passage has no connection with the actions of Jephthah recorded in Judges chapters 11 and 12, it cautions us further to give careful thoughts to making rash promises before God. It is a passage intended to guide us so that we know we don’t have to make any vows or vain promises before God can hear us or bless us. He already made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up His only son and– we don’t need no other thing — spoken or done to please Him.

Making hasty promises that we neither intend to keep nor are able to fulfill make us lose social, moral and spiritual credibility. It actually shows us as a novice, and reveals a poor understanding of God. It is important to know that our words matter to God; and we are held accountable for them. Remember our Lord’s words: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36–37, ESV).

Quote for the Day: “If you are given a chance to speak to a situation you are not prepared to face or you don’t know what to say: don’t even dare to say it!” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help me to choose my words carefully and faithfully, and to use them for the good of those who hear me. Make me a man of few and wise words, and let them be like fresh water from a spring that gives life, health, and joy—in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
