Don’t Try it on Your Own

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, May 30, 2022

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 18:41-46

Key Verse: 1 Kings 18:46 (NIV): “The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

You must have heard the warning: “Do not attempt this at home!” This warning usually comes after any dangerous skit or prank presented on television. Some of those look easy and fabulous but trying those on your own could lead to destruction of property, if not death. Some may lead to breakage of things or relationship, parental or spousal displeasure, dismemberment, leakage, foul discharge, mutilation, humiliation, dehydration, hypertension, etc. So, it is required, by law, to warn audience about how painful trying those on your own can be! We have a typical example of “don’t try this on your own” before us today. The opening clause of our key text already lets us know it’s not by Elijah’s power nor might. By “the power of the LORD came on Elijah” our text reveals how the hand of the Lord on Elijah made the impossible possible.

Brethren, this is a striking revelation that such exploit does not belong to human capability or ability. It was God that gave Elijah the supernatural strength to outrun Ahab’s chariot for so many miles. The same God can help you in every detail of your life. Don’t try to do anything on your own understanding and strength. Learn from Elijah’s patient-wait on the Lord in prayer. Learn from Elijah when answers to your fervent supplications seem not coming as you desired. Do not faint or give up. Continue in prayer until you could find that little hand of God. No one will find it possible or believable what God will do in your life as a result. God always strengthens His people in all things He assigns them in His mercy. It takes God alone to help a man who has been in a fast to be so divinely upheld to outrun (bear-footed) another man running on chariots. As long as we are not induced by self-will, God will do the impossible through us.

Quote for the Day: “Dependence upon God changes times and seasons. It makes the impossible possible: brings both the drought and the rain, and brings the fire and the power.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me the faith to trust Your goodness and strength in my life. Give me the willpower to continue to wait upon you in prayer until my needed change comes — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
