Drawing Out the Anointing

Today’s Text: 2 Kings 2:1-15

Key Verses: 2 Kings 2:12 (ESV): “And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.”

Perhaps, this is the longest devotion I ever wrote but it suffices so that we do not have to break it into parts. It’s so easy for a body of believers to pass from being the active powerful force for God in to being a passive powerless entity. Yes, they do so on believer at a time. Especially when God’s people gradually and continue to slide into failure to understand what it means to draw out the anointing and the blessing. This probably explains why there were so many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent only to a widow of Zarephath, in the land of Sidon and none of those of Israel.

The same fulness, from which prophets and apostles tapped great supply of grace and anointing still exists as of old. We can still walk in deeper grace today. Of course, Jesus said: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (Jn 14:12). Unfortunately, in the name of grace, most Christians today are already jolted into familiar spirit. They have become too casual, nonchalant and disrespectful of the holy things and men of God. It is not in vain that the Bible records Gehazi’s walking away with a leprosity while Elisha walked away with double portion blessing. Instead of seeing himself as a fellow minister. He called him “my father.” Whatever each person walks away with is a product of their attitude in relation to their prophets, pastors and leaders.

We find the secret of Elisha’s ability to draw out the anointing shrouded in his final cry: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. This reveals Elisha’s thought of his minister (Elijah). It is a statement of estimation of Elijah as better to him and to Israel than chariots and horsemen by his calling. Understanding snd recognizing the special place, assignment and influence of God’s chosen angel of our lives and churches is the truest safeguard for God’s people. That will determine what we can draw out while we serve with/under them.

Elisha was on his deathbed bed, yet Joash, king of Israel, went down to him and wept before him, crying, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”(2Kgs 13:14-26). In Matthew 18:3 Jesus was indirectly teaching how pride prevents us when he said, “Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” In Mark 2:5, He calls the paralyzed man "son" which in human view of child/Father relationship, he could not naturally father. He did the same, in John 13, calling his disciples “little children.” Paul blew this up when he steps into the office of a shepherd, a type of Christ, using teknia mou, “my little children” to describe the flock in Galatia including elders (Gal 4:19). When I was a student pastor in Ògbómòsó Nigeria, I lead a church of older folks who all call me father in the Lord. I always felt ashamed to be so called by them; but now I realize ours is a generation that must go back to them and learn why they live so long. It is indeed erroneous and makes no sense to stay under a shepherd that you cannot regard as your father in the Lord. No man takes such honor upon Himself.

Quote for the Day: “Just like Christ's submission to the Father’s elevated Him and gave Him name that is above all names;llsubmission through obedience to God activates God's power in a believer’s life." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please forgive me in any way I’ve ever been rebellious. Teach me to be submissive and respectful to those in authority over me. Help me be a light in our dark world; let Christ shine through me — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
