Today’s Text: Jeremiah 33:1-13
Key Verse: Jeremiah 33:11 (ESV): “The voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord: ‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!’ For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord.”
We live in a very low moment in time: moral values are rotten, spirituality fake, claims of love are turning out selfish, and friendship mostly deceptive. But what would we say to the Lord if any of us were prophet Jeremiah who lived and ministered during one of the bleakest times in Israel’s history? It is so disturbing how our nation has been troubled; but the doomed fate of Jeremiah’s country was real. It was sealed. Because of his people’s disobedience, he would have to live to see his temple and his city destroyed and his people dragged off into captivity.
Did he blame God or reject Him? Or, did he think that God will forever abandon His people? No! Instead, this prophet set us an all-time example. He kept his vision and his hope alive — of a future in which the Lord would restore His people through a new covenant so that, once again, the city would be filled with God’s redeemed people, who would rejoice and sing praise to the LORD of hosts, who is good, and whose mercy endures forever.
As we meditate upon this message of hope, we are reminded again that, regardless of what life brings, or how we are, God’s faithful love endures forever; and is looking out for us. This truth should always spur us first to return to God, and also to give thanks to Him always. What this means is that regardless of what we have done or failed to do, God does not stay angry forever m. No, but He delights to show us mercy when we return to Him. Perhaps, we need just one Jeremiah, today, who would declare this to this sin-ravaged age.
Quote for the Day: “God’s mercy endures: After a time of discipline, His love heals those who repent, and, like a shepherd, He leads them back to safety.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for loving me so much that you would set me free. I do not deserve this amazing love you always lavish on me. I long to live for you in a way that forever shows you how thankful I am for Your steadfast love. I pray that this redeeming love will touch others around and through me — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
