Today’s Text: James 4:13-17
Key Verses: James 4:15 (NIV): “Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
Just before midnight yesterday, I was still seated and working on some important files when thoughts about my beloved deaconess and evangelist Becky Adedokun’s birthday started flooding my heart. Then, I started thinking through some of the projections and expectations we shared 5 years ago when she clocked the golden age. Today, to the glory of God, I am a living witness to how gracious God has been to her.
In like manner, thinking through the global perspectives, all the fantastic projections and fascinating predictions of several decades ago about the year 2020 really touched me deeply. Scientists, ministries, educationists, physicians, and all categories of people and professionals made very frantic projections about what that year would hold. Unfortunately, no one foresaw the rattling event of the global pandemic. It halted all the plans and visions, and radically changed the entire planet and how we live.
While God helps His people to both will and do His good pleasure, James warns us never to view the future in a human lens-view. Doing so is tantamount to edging God out and omitting Him. It is a show of folly and arrogance. Janes challenges us to quit boasting about tomorrow. It recommends a better way to face the future: You should say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Don’t you ever let that say become over-familiar or trite in your mouth, God’s guidance, guardian, and providence are crucial for all peoples. Trusting in God’s everlasting arms is a sure way to face a fair future.
Quote for the Day: The providence of God in the midst of our uncertainties, and the supremacy of Divine will in all our occasions must be paramount in our lives.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for your will to be done in my life and in this world, for your way to rule here on earth as it does in heaven. I'm not in control, Lord, you are, Father, let your will be done, in my life, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
