Today’s Text: Acts 4:1-22

Key Verse: Acts 4:13 (NLT): “The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

Christianity has been largely reduced, these days, to a lot of mouthing cliché. People find it so easy to say something and do something else. Faith requires hearing, not learning. Ours, unfortunately, is a learned and learning generation; but people are still not coming to the knowledge of the truth. We are all learned and intelligent; but the fruits of ignorance more genuinely mark what we do, say, and represent. The persecutors of Peter and John "perceived that they were unlearned” men. So, they thought they were “ignorant men" because they were “not uneducated men.” But notice that they were wrong in their own conviction. They soon found out that the same demonstrated a quality of life comparatively higher and better than theirs; and than those of the learned folks known by them. Peter and John were men of strong faith. They were a people of genuine devotion. They tried by the people, and found only to be men of pure motives and godly zeal.

In what ways may we liken our own generation of Christians to the earliest apostles of our Lord? We don not have to be admirable in the sight of men; but are we acceptable as servants of Jesus Christ if and when they bring us under scrutiny? No odious hypocrisy was found in Peter and John. Instead, the more they examined them, the more of Christlikeness they found. Human learning is desirable, but it is far from being a necessary parameter to excellence of character or nobility of life. The questions are: Why do we learn all possible forms of godliness and deny the power thereof?! Why are we full of learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth?! Why are there more lexical Christians than lifestyle believers?! The answer is singular and very simple: faith is not how we move our lips, it is how we run our lives. Genuine courage in/through Jesus Christ is better acceptable to the watching world than the path of hypocrisyand of cowardice that we all have chosen. They saw the boldness of Peter and John and marveled. The ungodly age may pose as if they do not appreciated our truth because they are indicted by it; but it always enlists their attention, judges their intention and provokes their admiration. God's word to our generation today is: live exemplary lives, and you shall not only be noticed, you shall be heard.

Quote for the Day: “The way to stand out is not when we yield our character in compromise and conformity to the world. It is when we reveal our transformation in Christ.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please let this message bring me strength to stand up for You. Guide me in your truth and teach me to be an example of the believer, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
