Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 30:11-20
Key Verse: 1 Samuel 30:17 (NIV): “David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.”
Good warriors chose their battles. They are not trying to wane their strength over every opposition. No sensible warrior throws stones at a barking dog when he has array of battles against him. After determining a just war, a good soldier fights to the end otherwise he gives up too soon and finds himself the lawful captive even of a weaker enemy. Don’t be like the men of Philistine, who having made a successful expedition gave up the fight too soon. They prematurely deemed themselves perfectly secure and abandoned themselves to all manner of debauchery and party spirit—believing that all is well—but suddenly, they got raided, smitten, and destroyed. You must fight to finish.
In or for every victory, a good Christian soldier must be conscious of the words of Charlotte Elliott’s vigilate song, “Christian, seek not yet repose, cast thy dreams of ease away; thou art in the midst of foes: watch and pray!” This Philistine expedition is a clear example of Elliott’s caution that principalities and powers always muster their unseen array, waiting for our unguarded hours: not only should we watch and pray; but we must gird our heavenly armor on, and wear it ever, night and day. For “ambushed lies the evil one, we must “watch and pray!” We must fight to finish.
We have much to learn from David: Men who fight, fight to finish, recover their spoil, and bring back their captives. As it was for David, that nothing was lost; instead, he had a great deal of gains, so shall it be for the resilient man of the spirit, who fights the good fight of faith till the very end. David smote armed enemies from twilight morning unto the twilight evening of the next day: that is a great period of time to fight using sword. But this teaches Christians the example of determination, courage and strength needed to win the battle set before us. We must never drop off our spiritual sword until the battle is over. And now, David and all those who overcame mark our ways with one voice exclaiming to us: "Watch and pray."
Quote for the Day: “Victors shine more brightly not on the defeat of their victims but on the joy that they are not the victim.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, purge me from anything that is blocking me from walking in victory. Renew my strength so that I will never be weary in battles. Above all, Lord, please align me with Your heart to obey You, my Captain’s commands to the end, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
