Following God through the Winding Paths

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 22, 2022

Today Text: 1 Corinthians 2:10-16

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV): “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

New life in Christ ushers us into an entirely new terrain of life: a new journey, and a completely new pathway. And because the natural condition of human mind is spiritual darkness, we can neither know the path nor are we able to walk in it. We need the help of the Holy Spirit. The path is narrow, rough and winding. Yes, we all need the Holy Spirit’s illumination to comprehend or apprehend the spiritual journey. God’s path for our lives is rarely a straight line. Abraham did not have it straight. Jacob had his own fair share. Joseph has a most glorious vision of his life, but he did not escape God’s winding path to his destiny. And, of course, Jesus Christ, our Lord, walked his way through Gethsemane and the cross.

God’s path often takes us through detours and tunnels. But the apostle wants us to understand how to walk with God even when we do not understand where He is taking us, or things do not go the way we planned. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit not only adapts us to the journey, but it discerns every twist and turn. We all need the help of the Holy Spirit who is the source and standard of all spiritual life. Spiritual things are things pertaining to God which are in total contrast to ours. That is why we are often antagonistic to the things of the spirit. But the more we yield to the Holy Spirit’s control, the more we are receptive to the leading of Christ, and the more willing and able we are to follow Him through the winding paths.

Quote for the Day: “As Christians, we are able to weather any and every storm because we are renewed, taught and led by the Holy Spirit.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for your will to be done in my life and in this world. Let your will alone be done in my life. I resign total control to you O Lord, even through those paths when I find it hard to admit and follow — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
