Today’s Text: Psalm 49:1-20
Key Verse: Psalm 49:13 (ESV): “This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts.”

The world has witnessed the rise and fall of countless great men and women. In 2022 alone Alaafia of Oyo, Abe Shinzo, Mikhail S. Gorbachev, Sidney Poitier, Bill Russell, Loretta Lynn, Jiang Zemin, Benedict XVI, Madeleine Albright, Jean-Luc Godard, Abedi Pelé, Barbara Walters, Ivana Trump, Queen Elizabeth II and many others. Some of whose sudden demise would be a watershed moment, not just for friends and family, but our entire world. However, their demises have great lessons to teach us from today’s word of the Lord.
We are reminded of the common end of all men — both lie and great, rich and poor. While all stand on the queue to a necessary irreversible end of all, God wants us to learn that no man can redeem his life, or that of another man. No payment is ever enough for the ransom for a life. Death is a common end of all, and when it comes, no man can twist its hands, and no one lives forever. Therefore, do not follow the path of foolish people who place their trust in power and possession.
The sons of Korah tells us that it is a mark great folly to be deceived by obsession for power and placement of one’s confidence in material things. If you are blessed, rich and famous today; never be flattered by it; or you may falter and be self-destroyed. People may praise you, but never let it get to you, or your heart will puff. And, also, never become oppressed by the prosperity of the wicked, who are obsessed and boast about personal riches. Only the foolish dwell on blessings rather than the blesser; creatures rather than the creator.
Quote for the Day: “It is infatuation and flattery to trust in prosperity and hope in perpetuity.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to put my trust in you rather than things. Help me to love and seek you more than materials. Fill my heart with wisdom to guide and direct my steps each day — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
