Today’s Text: Psalm 46:1-11
Key Verse: Ephesians 3:16 (NLT): “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.”

The word fortify is from ancient idea of fortress. I doubt if anyone has a way to truly capture the essence and meaning of a fortress—probably we may capture it from the medieval understanding of the fortress house. Or, perhaps, the closest we could get is the idea of our modern military strongholds. Our armies build fortresses strong enough to shield a large garrison, to ensure that the integrity of the safety of a people, land, person or thing is or are not susceptible to outside disturbance or invasion. Apostle Paul alluded so significantly to many military ideas in his systematizing the gospel message. He may have been influenced a lot by the notable presence and incredible strategies of Roman soldiers. Therefore, it is important for all believers in Christ to understand this apostolic prayer, and what it means to be strengthened with might by God’s Spirit in the inner man.
First, the prayer reveals the desire of the Apostle Paul to see each of us come into full confidence, which comes from the realization that God is the source of all life and being. That awareness is not the fortification itself; but it gives us fortitude. Great courage to live comes from knowing that God is our strength and shield. His Spirit gives life and strength to those who trust Him. As this prayer of Paul illuminates us today, let us soar in this strength and position ourselves for our life of dominion. The way to walk in this strength is when we are rooted in love, and pursue the fulness of God. According to Paul, our inner man is the entirety of our being—our intellect, emotion, including our spiritual and moral. We are not limited by our stamina, stature or status; but our fortress is the riches of His unlimited, illimitable and immutable glory. Such is the indwelling strength and power at work within us to perfect our every weakness.
Quote for the Day: “Among our many blessings in Christ is the classlessness of the divine power. It is totally unprejudiced. The strong is not any more at advantage than the weak. But indeed, all men, in Christ, find strength for their weaknesses’.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I draw near to the throne of grace, that I may receive not only mercy to pardon, but also sufficient strength to help weather my every storm — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
