Giving Thanks in Difficult Times

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Friday, November 14, 2025

Today's Text: Jonah 2:1–9

Key Verse: Jonah 2:9 (KJV): “But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.”

How would you think praise and worship in the belly of a shark feels?! But in that belly of the fish, and at the bottom of the Sea, Jonah lifted up his voice in thanksgiving. What can we learn from a nan whose circumstances appeared hopeless—darkness, isolation, and uncertainty surrounded him—but whose response was gratitude. Jonah's prayer reveals that giving thanks is not limited by place or predicament. Thanksgiving, born in the depths of distress, becomes a lifeline anchored to God’s mercy and deliverance.

We can see from Jonah's case that when we choose gratitude over grumbling in hard moments, we are paving the way for our spirit to align with heaven’s certainty. Like Jonah, acknowledging God’s sovereignty and faithfulness—even before rescue arrives—breaks the chains of fear and despair. Faithful thanks confesses that grace is present even in difficulty, and that each pit can become a pulpit for praise.

Gratitude in adversity produces strength that cannot be shaken. In turning to God with thanksgiving, Jonah found hope rising beyond the shadows. His voice declared trust in a God who saves; his thanks turned trial into testimony. Giving thanks in tough times opens our hearts to receive God’s surprising provision, teaching us that no situation is beyond divine redemption.

Giving thanks when circumstances are painful refines our faith. It moves us from complaint to confidence, from the grip of worry to the warmth of worship. A thankful heart distinguishes the believer—it is not silenced by storms but sings louder because of them. In every season, especially the challenging ones, cultivating gratitude helps us discover treasures of wisdom, courage, and peace.

Why thank God in difficult moments? Because thanksgiving reorients us to the truth of God’s steadfast love. It lifts our eyes above the waves to see His saving hand. Gratefulness in hardship is an act of worship; it signals trust, humility, and readiness for renewal. Through thanksgiving, we welcome the light of God’s promises into the darkest of nights.

Set apart time today to thank God from a place of honest need. Recall where He has met you before, and offer a sacrifice of praise even if the outcome seems uncertain. Whisper your thanks through tears, knowing that God collects every prayer and reaches into every pit. Express gratitude to others who are walking in troubled paths, encouraging them with the hope your own heart has found.

Quote for the Day: “Gratitude in difficulty is faith’s anthem—it proclaims God’s goodness before the dawn breaks, trusting His light will soon shine.” (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Dear Heavenly Father and Merciful Lord, I thank You for meeting me in my depths. Teach me to give thanks not only in triumph but also in trial. Fill me with courage to praise You from the hardest places, and deepen my trust in Your salvation. Let my gratitude be a testimony that draws others to Your unfailing love. Use me in every way possible, Lord, to shine Your hope in every dark moment—in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
