Go and do Likewise

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, January 23, 2022

Today’s Text: Luke 10:25-37

Key Verse: Luke 10:37 (NIV): “The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.””

We live in an age of discrimination, segregation, and disparity. People despise those who are different from them and hold them in contempt. This hostility has been around almost from the beginning of human history. We learned the hostility of Cain against his brother, Abel. The Bible tells us about the hostility that existed between surrounding nations against the people of Israel. Edom was a relative nation, yet was a sworn enemy of God’s holy people.

Even during the days of Christ, Samaritans, who were also relatives to the Jews despised them and hold them in contempt; and so did the Jews. When a self-seeking legalistic enquirer approached Jesus on who his neighbor should be; Jesus found an occasion to teach him, and all of us that, despite our human differences, God seeks love and compassion rather than hate and hostility. He (Jesus) described how a Samaritan helps a strange injured Jew—even when his kinsmen would not. Jesus wanted to teach humanity that the neighbor figure of any man is the one who identifies with him despite differences, color, class, or creed; and shows him empathy and mercy—while not expecting any returned kindness or reward.

As a result of God’s mercies and grace, a new week is hereupon; and the Lord wants us to go and act in the spirit of the Samaritan, who needed no careful scrutiny, masterly endorsement or nicely-calculated qualification for who, or who not, should his neighbor be before helping out. Go and do likewise. Go and help others. Go and forgive them. Go and fellowship in kind gestures with any passing contact.

Quote for the Day: “A Christian may be an embezzlement of God manifold graces and love, who refuses to demonstrate enduring love towards others.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I humble myself before You in awareness of my frailty; yet overwhelmed by your love. Please make me Your instrument of love to others whenever Your love is not known — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please have a great week ahead—With all my love and prayers,
