Today’s Text: Judges 6:11-24
Key Verse: Judges 6:14 (HCSB) — “The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the power of Midian. Am I not sending you?"
Looking at the words of Gideon: “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house” (vs. 15) one may be moved to make a quick award an excellent humility to Gideon. But before you adopt those words as your next humble posture, please take a second look at it. We all are eager to run and operate when we feel efficient and armed with everything we need for a project; and shy back when we feel not capable on the ground of our weak points. This is not humility. It it complex. Or, at best, it is false humility.
False humility is a subtle face mask of pride. Except you understand this, you may be claiming to be a humble person not realizing that such claim itself is pride. At large, it is so easy it is for us to think we are walking in humility while we are all arrogant and proud. Humility, according to Scripture is a person’s inbuilt or learnt quality of being free from arrogance and pride, and having an accurate estimate of self. If you were Gideon, you may also easily confessed to your abasement because you are not among the princes of the land. Ask yourself, if you were, would you still stay bowed and confess a need for God? God has bestowed strength in us; but he also wants us to both humble ourselves as well as eschew false humility.
Quote for the Day: “Self-Righteousness is a sign of pride even just as self abatement in the face of need may be false humility. (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord. Search me and know my heart. Show me any areas of false humility or any way in which I have opened the door to false humility in my life, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
