God Commands All Things

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, March 6, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 17:1-7

Key Verse: 1 Kings 17:4 (ESV) — “And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there."

Let us not wonder what will become of us if we were the prophet whom God used to declare that the heavens shall be shut up and there shall be no rain. Today’s text calls us to rather ponder on the same power that moves us, and that had shut up the heavens. That power is not of us; it is divine, and could surely also undertake divinely to take care of His prophet. He is able to cause every other course of nature to serve His purpose.

When King Nebuchadnezzar built a blazing furnace for the three Hebrews who did not fall down and worship him; the God they served undertook for them and commanded the fire to serve His purpose. When Darius threw Daniel into the Den of Lions, God commanded the lions to befriend him. If and when today’s generation of believers trust God in these manner, they will no longer be afraid to stand for Him. Do you know that if it pleases God, He is capable of commanding the same Sun that smiles and shines on earth to turn into an elemental fire that scorches anything which threatens His purpose. Yes, God can; but for His enduring mercies.

Let us trust God enough in any assignment, commission and in life as a whole. The God we serve commands all things. The key to deeper understanding of the identity of the ravens is by not objectifying them, but to perceive them in phenomenal terms. They may therefore represent all incredible or impossible sources of Providence. Some ancient manuscripts have “Arabians” or “merchants” in the place of “ravens.” In fact, God could send angels, or lions, or eagles, or even any wealthy human merchant from any part of the world to minister to the prophet; but He wants to show that He can serve His own purposes by any means — including the meanest creatures, just as by the mightiest.

Quote for the Day: “The same God that commanded the fish that vomited Jonah onto dry land also commanded the ravens that fed Elijah. He can also command anything to serve His purpose(s) in us.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, I acknowledge my total dependence on You. All things are subject to You. Please help me to anchor my whole life on You, and trust You, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
