God’s “Let” Diary (Part 105) — Let No Fruit Grow on It

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, September 28, 2020

Today’s Text: Matthew 21:17-21

Key Verses: Matthew 21:19 (KJV) — “And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away..

Whatever lesson you draw from today's multi-lesson meditation, my prayers for you are these: may you not be a fruitless fig; may you not be a worthless believer; and may you not be cursed in Jesus name. Presumably, our Lord could not have left the hospitable home of Mary and Martha in Bethany and be so hungry in such a short distance; but we must agree that this occurrence is to give us an opportunity to learn. The most important key to the text is realizing that Jesus is pointing our attention to the danger of living a worthless life. A believer who pretends promissory spirituality and does not live up to it is here likable to the fruitless fig.

The fig stood on His way to the temple and symbolizes the spiritual outlook of an average Jew or believer and his spiritual duty. Essentially, the temple blossoms with glorious opportunities to pacify hunger of people; but realistically, it has been relegated to a den of robbers. You and I are God's temple. We are His living figs. We are not called to showmanship of our prosperity. We often parade empty glory to entice lost hungry souls, but unfortunately, when they come, they find no fruit consistent to our promise.

As God's living figs and temple, we are here to showcase the glory of God, pacify the hunger of men, and quench their thirst. If we fail in these regards, we become fruitless figs and tasteless salt. What we profess matters little compare to what we produce. The pronouncement “let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever” shows how detestable worthless living could be in the sight of God. Jesus is still looking for fruit on our highly blessed living figs today; may He not find us a bunch of worthless leaves.

Quote for the Day: "The fig was not cursed for fruitlessness; it was cursed for pretending fruitfulness.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, help me to live up to my calling and to bear fruits that will give glory to You, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
