Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, September 29, 2020
Today’s Text: Matthew 21:33-44
Key Verses: Matthew 21:33 (KJV) — “Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.”
We have before us today an occasion in which people challenged the authority of Jesus; and each time that happens, He always has a way He responds with a parable. He had told a first parable, and when it becomes obvious that His challengers didn't get Him, it becomes important to give a second one. By this parable Jesus wants to impress His authority not just in mundane and material matters; but upon each of us and all we represent. The direct import of today's scripture is that we all are like tenants placed in charge of everything committed to our hands, including life itself. Our souls and bodies are vineyards of the Lord, and we have been called to oversee every matter of productivity in ways that pay our all round tenements to God, the Owner, at the final harvest time.
The term vineyard is a favorite Bible image often used by Christ to call mind that Jesus has authority over us as individual believer because we are always stewards of both our souls, the spiritual vineyard; and bodies, the physical vineyard. As such, this parable puts us in the position of soils in the hands of God; God Himself as the landowner; and everything He has endowed us with to work His vineyard. He has invested so much in us: hedged our lives round about, and digged a winepress of unlimited mercies and favor springing forth each day. He builds towers of unbreakable divine protection on us. We must be careful therefore not to act like the temple leaders of Christ’s days that made themselves evil husbandmen and stewards. If by any means or standard, your life defrauds God of the rightful and expected fruits, then this allegory puts you in the same docket as those evil servants; but if you put your life to work for the return of dividends for His kingdom, then yours is a glorious reward on the great day of harvest and reckoning.
Quote for the Day: "Whatever you do with the stewardship of your life will determine wether your reward would be an eternal crowning clemency or an everlasting crushing cruelty.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, help me to pledge my continued allegiance as steward to You, and use me to draw others to the same faithful endeavor, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
