God’s “Let” Diary (Part 133) — Let Their Eyes Be Darkened

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, November 6, 2020

Today’s Text: Romans 11:1-10

Key Verses: Romans 11:9 (KJV) — “Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

From the Old Testament to the New, Jews, are mostly people that would rather pay heavy prices and exert some difficult burdens to earn salvation and peace with God. Most people today are also like that. Unfortunately, salvation is not something that one could buy with money, efforts or sacrifice. Psalm 49:7–8 says, “Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice.” God’s saving work is completely a product of His grace. It is both inversely and directly contrary to efforts. By grace, God satisfies His terror through the finished work Christ on the cross. He softens the hearts of the rebellious and inputs the righteousness of Christ on man. This already sounds so foolish to men whose heart are darkened by sin and Satan. They would rather reject this light and remain in the darkness of their unbelief.

Today’s scripture draws from David’s prophecy that a time is coming when God shall give the people up for darkened eyes because they reject His plans and pursue worldliness. The apostle needed to bring this prophetic caution to our notice so that we do not also fall into the same deep sleep as the Jewish nation. They were given unique opportunity, but they failed to aknowledge God’s Providence. They despised their need for the Savior. They pride themselves upon religion; whereas they tread on the borders of spiritual ruin. David, in Psalm 69, having foretold the sufferings of Christ from his own people, the Jews, also foretold the dreadful judgments of God upon them. This is not just a note of caution; it is equally a spiritual counsel not to chose darkness over light: otherwise, you would slip under the law of being blinded, incapable of discerning or receiving the truth, and a life that is bowed by the yoke slavery.

Quote for the Day: “Any generation or people that chose darkness over light shall walk in darkness and stumble upon their own shadows.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord! Create in me a new heart in which no darkness dwells. Overflow the broken and damaged places of my heart with your love and grace, washing the hurt away, making all things new so, like a mirror, I will reflect You in all things — I will walk in light that no darkness overcomes, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
