God’s “Let” Diary (Part 136) — Let Love Be Without Dissimulation

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday,, November 10, 2020

Today’s Text: Romans 13:1-7

Key Verses: Romans 13:1 (KJV) — “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

Does a postmodern believer appreciate the power of his civic duties and right as the people of this world? Are we not pushed back and relegated because of our wrong understanding of the history and principle of separation of Church and State. Therefore, our sense of duty as citizens has been sabotaged. Many of us rather keep aloof from public life, and many despise participation in political opportunities on the ground of corruption. But the word of God makes it clear that as Christians, we are citizens both of the kingdom of God and of our earthly nations. And we must be faithful to both.

Civil non-involvement sometimes equals civil disobedience; and God is admonishing us through today’s text on how the earthly authorities image and/or represents divine authority. There is a clear indication that, corruption and injustice aside, earthly authorities and governmental leaders are not meant to be terrors to good works. They are not supposed to be. They are terrors to evil according to verse 3. That is why we who are godly should not stay away from the corridors of power, leaving it to the hands of evil ones. If we don’t, then we will find this scripture more true to the fact that our governments, according to Apostle Peter, are actually appointed "for the punishment of evil-doers.” (1 Peter 2:14).

Quote for the Day: “God sets up kings and anoints rulers. He chooses and deposes those He would accordingly His determinate counsel.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, give conscience to our men and leaders. Let them fear you and rule justly in a way that those who follow them also shall do the same, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
