God’s “Let” Diary (Part 154) — Let Us Cleanse Ourselves

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, December 4, 2020

Today’s Text: 2 Corinthians 7:1-4

Key Verses: 2 Corinthians 7:1 (KJV) — “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Theme of spiritual cleansing and holy living run through the Bible, Old and New Testament. Paul, having charged the Corinthian church about different doctrines and spiritual matters, it was time for the conclusion of his exhortations. And nothing could any more fill the heart of the apostle than the important matter of cleansing ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. The tone of the text is such that except the foregoing is done, we could take no direct steps towards perfection. Our human spirit lusts to envy, nurtures inordinate affections, and often excite the body to various indulgences.

How then shall a believer be stimulated against impure imagination? How shall we escape the desire for fleshly gratification? We have a decision to make through the Holy Spirit of promise: we must cleanse ourselves from all licentious past. This is the gospel principle of action: We do not, separate ourselves from uncleanness in order that you may get a right of sonship. No, but it is because we are sons of God that we cleanse ourselves and are pure. Peter also urges the believers in 1Peter 2:11 saying, “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” In the reflection of John, “everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” (1 John 3:3)

Quote for the Day: “We do not, separate ourselves from uncleanness in order that you may get a right of sonship. No, but it is because we are sons of God that we cleanse ourselves and are pure.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Father of all mercies, please create in me a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
