Today’s Text: Galatians 5:13-26

Key Verses: Galatians 5:26 (KJV) — “Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

There is a natural part of us that puffs and boasts: that part is called ego. It is the source of pride, and it makes us seek what we may not have, claim what we are not and reference what we have or can do. It may not be an overstatement to say that every natural man is akin to flaunt his glory and refer to his prospects. Unfortunately, all these lead to vain glory. Do not get me wrong: The things of the world that man seeks may be rightly desired and possessed for the use, purpose and glory of God, as He (God) intended; but the lust of eyes and pride of life often derail us from seeking the things we seek for the glory of God. So that if care is not taken, the more blessing man has, or the more promotion he gets leads him boasting, and then arrogance of pride.

The Galatians were admonished against such tendencies because they were so richly endowed with notable gifts or endowment (from Greek charisma or charismata). And it is so easy for people who are so favored and endowed to slide into the stance of vainglorious. In 2 Corinthians 12:7 the author of this text (Paul) considered his extraordinary endowment of speech and revelations some probable cause for pride; and confessed his believe as to why he considered God to be responsible for the thorn in his flesh for his good. The Apostle’s concern was born probably out of the paltry competitions that arose on account of some having some supposed advantages over others. This situation may be similar to the postmodern church where everyone does ministry with every consciousness of competition with every other. Paul cautions: let us not be desirous of boastful, proud or empty advantages.

Quote for the Day: “When God cherishes a man’s labor he endows him more. When the man cherishes his endowment, he boasts. And when God wants to help him, he sends some side thorns so that he will never have to boast of nothing — even of being humble.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, give me the mind of Christ so that I will humble myself, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
