Today’s Text: Ephesians 4:25-32
Key Verses: Ephesians 4:29 (KJV) — “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

The use of a believer’s tongue or speech has always been a matter of significant attention in both scriptural Testaments. It is therefore not to be taken for granted by any generation. When Kondraty Ryleyev was sentenced to be hanged for his part in an unsuccessful uprising against the Russian Czar Nicholas I. He was lucky that the rope broke and he fell to safety. And during those days, accidents of this sort usually resulted in a state pardon. However, when Ryleyev got up, he said that Russia does not know how to do anything right: not even how to make a good rope. So instead of a pardon, Nicholas commanded that they prove him wrong. So he was hanged a second time and lost his life. Today’s text tells us that a man’s tongue does corrupt him, but this is not only true; it also does condemn him. In Proverbs 18:21 we are told how “the tongue has the power of life and death.” By this, both the stakes and liabilities of our speeches are high. Our words has the ability to release either life, or death. They are able to build us or others up, or tear us or others down.
To check the fire that our tongues can cause, Christ taught us to pay attention to the spiritual dimension of the defilement caused by the tongue. The Jews referenced what they eat; but He (Jesus) taught that what men ought to reference was not from what entered their mouths, but what come out of it. It is in the same spirit that Apostle Paul charges us to let no corrupt communication proceed from our mouth. This is an indirect call to give careful thoughts to both the tongue and the heart. Matthew 15:19 tells us that "out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, false witness, and blasphemies.” And since this is true, what comes out of the tongue "defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature.” (James 3:6)
Quote for the Day: “James 3:10 is an indictment to human double standard of which many Christians are not free.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Father of all Mercies, please grant me the caution of the Holy Spirit. Help me live a spirit controlled life in, both in my attitude and utterances, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
