God’s “Let” Diary (Part 166) — Let All Bitterness Be Put Away

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, December 17, 2020

Today’s Text: Ephesians 4:25-32

Key Verses: Ephesians 4:31 (KJV) — “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.

Out of our text today, we can identify five forms of evil temper from where all manners of negative emotions and actions spring. Perhaps you have been wondering why we have so much sour, irritable, spiteful temperament among God’s redeemed people. Well, you are not alone, I have heard most Christians express similar concern. Unfortunately, the situation refuses to go away. If these things are common among the gentiles, let us grant it; but we are the children of God, and know whose children we are, and the Spirit we are given. The apostle is here saying that all of us, who are called by the name of the Lord should never allow anything which places us in an attitude of constant antagonism with fellow-men — whether within the household of faith or without.

People will always spite us; but we are given a different spirit. We have been commanded to love and consider others. My friend, Dr. Phillip Oyewale of Pentecost Cottenham Baptist Church on Coleridge, Liverpool United Kingdom once shared the touching story of a minister who had quarrel in the past with a number of ministers, and never bothered to restore the friendship until upon a day when he showed up in a pastor’s fellowship where he confessed to this past bitterness, offered forgiveness and requested for the fellowship to pray for him. While kneeling down and they were praying for him, he breathed his last, and died. Well, if anyone asks “why God allowed this?” Perhaps one answer might be so that we who remain may refrain from bitterness, and ponder on where we shall spend eternity — all the more as we know that these tempers find their true place among the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21).

Quote for the Day: “It’s high time Christians learn from the oyster. Throw a grain of sand on it, and it turns into a beautiful pearl. Why should we be the opposite? Why should we take pearls and turn them into sand?” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Father, please bring conviction to our hearts. We are your beloved daughters and sons, but today we are also your “busted” daughters and sons; for resentment comes to us as quickly as someone steals our parking place, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
