Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, December 31, 2020
Today’s Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Key Verses: 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV) — “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

If you are reading this today, then I should rejoice with you because God in His mercies has brought you to see a spectacular day as this. It means that despite all odds, you have seen the end of 2020. There is no doubt that it has been a most troubled year by every means. But we are still here. Looking back, we all have reasons to give God all the glory. However, it is also a moment of sober reflection on the past and a time to refocus for what lay ahead. As we stand at the turn of the year, and the threshold of 2021, the thoughts of today’s text will guide our hearts in making adequate transition from where we are coming from into where we all desire to be in the coming year. So, whether you and I have had it dark or bright, for our sake, Apostle Paul focuses two classes of people whose conditions correspond respectively to the metaphors of night and day.
We all associate gloom, death, evil, sickness and trauma to night, while their opposites such as brightness, life, goodness, gains, etc. portray the idea of day. Thus St. Paul alludes to the images of night and day to help us see beyond the abstract. Just like the music master is deliberate with his accidental notes in chromatic chords, God is working amidst all details of our nights to give us a beautiful daylight tone. However, we have a part to play. As Christians, we are exhorted to conduct ourselves in careful spiritual alertness. As Julius Caesar was warned in Shakespeare’s epic docudrama to “beware of the hides of March,” and repeatedly cautioned that the hides is not yet gone; Christians are warned here by the apostle to continue to be on their guard with all watchfulness, soberness and prayerfulness. Lest we bring back the imports of gloomy night into our day. Therefore, I implore you to avail yourself of all spiritual resources and programs that set you on your watch as we seek to turn the night of 2020 into a most glorious day of 2021.
Quote for the Day: ”Darker night calls for fuller light. The thickness of the night is not an excuse for the children of light to live as sons of the night. The ticker the dark, the brighter our light.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, give me oil to light my lamp; illuminate my darkness and cause Your light of hope to shine in this world’s darkness. Please fill me with Your light, in Jesus name. Amen.
