God’s “Let” Diary (Part 181) — Let the Woman Learn in Silence 4

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, January 9, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 2: 9–15

Key Verses: 1 Timothy 2:11 (KJV) — “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.“

Beside the authority and dominion bestowed upon each soul as eternally competent before God, we have seen how the Bible insists that every believer is God’s royal priest. God created all men (generic) in His image: “male and female created He them.” (Genesis 5:2) Also, the term Adam is a generic or collective term from a Hebrew word meaning mankind, denoting the species, and connects both the man and the wo-man. Therefore, whenever God commands the man, it is often in this inclusive sense. Beside, having journeyed through both Old and New Testaments, we have observed the unity of Scripture on God’s dealings with, and use of, women. God is the God of all flesh. He uses both men and women in sundry times. However, what does the Apostle meant by “let the woman learn in silence?“ What is the context to this obscure scriptural passage? How do we understanding and interpret the original language in question? And how shall we discover the author’s original motif?

Today, we shall seek some answers in the context: Paul wrote to his spiritual son, Timothy who was leading a much troubled church in Ephesus to address specific problems. Timothy was a young and not very experienced leader. The church under him was encountering so many false teachers, which pose threats to the gospel, to new believers, and to the life of the church. Local women newly embraced the gospel and are just coming out of cultural restrictions and religious barriers; and such new liberty and footings found among men definitely posed issues of decorum, maturity and order. They were overwhelmed by the newly found freedom and needed to learn more about comportment and decorum in their assembly. Some scholars suggest that the influence of false teachers also responsible for some unrestrained advances from some inexperienced women in their assembly. All these made it necessary for Paul to write this as a personal letter to Timothy, rather than to the church to help him deal with these situations. As we close today’s meditation, it becomes obvious that the text is specific to the church at Ephesus in which false teaching was resulting in inappropriate behavior.

Quote for the Day: ”Christian fellowship is a call to occasion and decorum. We must come in spirit and in truth with nothing faded or faked.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, please give us a large heart to love those you love, accept those you accept, and allow those you allow, in Jesus name. Amen.

DAY 6 OF 21 DAYS OF DOMONION: Please join our ongoing 21 Days of Operation Daniel Fasting & Prayer with daily gathering in church between 9 and 10pm CST. Use the words of 1 Kings 5:2-6 to pray, today, against any spiritual Leviathan that may want to perpetuate or is peroetuating shadows of the past.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
