Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 2: 9–15
Key Verses: 1 Timothy 2:11 (KJV) — “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.”

Today brings us to the sixth meditation on our series: Let the Woman Learn in Silence. We have seen how this key verse is being misapplied and misinterpreted. The problem is: most people try to rationalize scriptural revelations, which are divine truth, using human intellect. Unfortunately, God’ mysteries are not discernible within the frame of sensual biases. When St. Augustine was meditating on the mystery of the Trinity. He was walking by the seashore, and saw a child running back and forth the Sea, using a shell to carry water from the ocean into a pit. His intention was to pour the entire ocean into his hole. God’s message to Augustine here was that it would be easier to fit all the sea water into the hole than to fit the mystery of God into human little intellect. Whenever we access God’s truth and mystery, we must be wary of using human rationality.
For the past six meditations, we have been taking deeper look into broader scriptural revelation and unity, the context, cultural light and the author’s words and motif. Paul was not against women, he was against the culture that relegated them to exploited productive class that restricted in rights and are not capable of learning the law. He is advocating their right to learn the law. Of course, being uneducated and novices, they had to learn discreetly and in submission. This is countercultural to the ongoing oppression of the gender. Paul’s idea of submission is hinged upon his analogy of Christ and the church; as well as that of the husband and his bride. The church has full access in the commonwealth of Christ and is a full partaker with His nature. The same is true of the wife and his husband; as well as the women in the church of Jesus Christ.
Quote for the Day: ”If women are to learn God’s truth in quietness and submission; can we dare say men are to learn the same in lousy and arrogant spirit? Certainly not! All Christians are called to mutual submission and soberness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, like Reinhold Niebuhr, I ask you to please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference, in Jesus name. Amen.
