God’s “Let” Diary (Part 185) — Let No Man Despise thy Youth

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, January 14, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 4:11-16

Key Verses: 1 Timothy 4:12 (KJV) — “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

Timothy was relatively young when his spiritual and apostolic mentor, Paul, sent him to continue, complete and charge various churches planted by him (Paul). Timothy was to teach the churches and lead them through difficult moments and process of appointing elders to govern and shepherd the assemblies. The spirit of the text is that Timothy‘s task being so spectacular, it calls for no lesser conduct so that his act will not lead to any occasion in which men will be able to despise him. This is clearly a continuation of yesterday's theme of blamelessness.

The admonition to Timothy is as relevant to us today. Both the then known world as well as ours would dispise anyone whose words, action and conduct indicate blame and call for respectable. For instance, a person of frivolous words and questionable character; who is also a rattle-brain in the society can never be the ornament of the Church, the salt of the earth or the light of the world.

People are sensitive to notice such contradictory lifestyle; and will invariably despise it. But we are called to a life of dignity. Though we live in an undignified age, we must conduct ourselves with all necessary decorum. Our command is clear: we must let no one have a reason to despise us by reason of age or conduct. We must carry ourselves with impeccable gravity, wisdom, and steadiness, instead of exposing ourselves to contempt. We must continue to live in a way that will rather gain respect than contempt.

Quote for the Day: ”Christian graces flourish brighter in the face of conduct; our light shines brighter with the oil character.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you transform me to be an example to everyone around me. Make my words kind; my actions helpful, my love true, my spirit strengthening, and my faith edifying, in Jesus name. Amen.
