God’s “Let” Diary (Part 188) — Let Us therefore Fear, Lest..!

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, January 18, 2021

Today’s Text: Hebrews 4:1-2

Key Verses: Hebrews 4:1 (KJV) — “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

We have heard and read how it was written that “today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” (Hebrews 3:15) This is an unfortunate scriptural description of how unbelief shut the children of Israel out of the promised rest; and how we may fall into the same loss if we fall into the same unbelief. They saw the mighty works of God for many years in the desert and chose disobedience instead of trusting the one who provided for them. They hardened their heart and were unwilling to rely on God or follow His plans for them. The result was clear: they wandered through the wilderness for forty years until every son of disobedience died off.

This, the writer of Hebrews says, calls for us to fear; not slavish trepidation not dread nor terror; but careful application of the reality of the promise and the possible consequence of missing the same. It is a call to a sober, humble, reverent, watchful, prayerful spirit. It is the same sense of working out the salvation that God works in us with fear and trembling, “lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” Wether we all like it or not there always comes a great testing-time. Every student enrols to receive a diploma but not everyone is able to fulfil the requirements and pass the tests to acquire the goal. As children of God, we should strive carefully so that none of us comes short of the promised rest, be it through evil heart of unbelief, or disobedience. As spiritual Israel, let us all keep our spiritual Canaan in view. Let us not give a foothold to any possibility of failing our faith in Jesus Christ.

Quote for the Day: ”We are called to fear God; not by a terrified spirit but a sober, humble, reverent, watchful, and prayerful spirit.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, please help and see me through; help me stand strong through the troubled waters to the promised rest, in Jesus name. Amen.
