Today’s Text: Revelation 2:8-11
Key Verses: Revelation 2:11 (KJV) — “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.”
Beneath the city of Rome there is a long succession of subterranean streets and galleries, quarried from the rocky strata of the soil, which are now opened for strangers and holy land tourists to see. They are the most astonishing cemeteries of saints. They are called the Catacombs. They are the burial places of the martyrs of the Christian faith. The inscriptions are passionately affectionate, speaking of the hope which they have in Christ in contrast to the despair of those who did not have the living hope in Christ. The martyrs endured persecution, bore the torturing racks and the burning coals, and when they breathed their last, their precious dust were laid there with tears of joy, in the full assurance of the life beyond death, and beyond the flame and dungeon.
One of the notable inscriptions of the Catacombs remains the golden text of today’s meditation. Anyone who endures to the end will not be harmed by the second death. The martyrs’ bodies laid in the Catacombs in a most peaceful quiet, teaching us that pain is temporary. They teach us that we only wear the crown if we bear the cross. They teach us that death has been swallowed up in victory. The phrase “He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death”points us to the ultimate victory of Christ in redeeming out soul from death which is other than that of the body. Every believer in Christ stands in victory over the second death. As long as we have been saved by the precious blood of Jesus; and live the life of the spirit in Christ; we shall also escape death of the spirit, or the second death. Let us therefore take up our cross daily and follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to the very end. Whatever awaits us: gain or pain.
Quote for the Day: ”The brighter the light of Christ we shine to the world, the higher our chances of being persecuted by the world.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, I come before you seeking your strength during these hard times. Renew my strength. Let my heart find comfort in you, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
