Today’s Text: Job 15:20-35
Key Verses: Job 15:31 (NASB): “Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness will be his reward.”
Have you ever wondered why ourgeneration is so trapped in the feeling of emptiness? Why is almost everyone held swayed in the hollow of frustration and disappointment? Or just why do we all seem to be at a loss as to what on earth is going on?! You are definitely not alone; and most importantly, God has answers for us. He is also willing to help us deal with our emptiness. If we are willing too, He will fill our lives with purpose. By sending today’s word, He wants to deliver us from the destruction of emptiness (Psalm 107:20). The text gives a clear clue into why we wallow in such forlorn moods and motions, and counsels us on the way of escape.
Apart from the natural void in every man, which only Him (God) can fill, our choices and lifestyle make us reject just what is good for us, and settle for false things. We often convince our flesh to accept what is not true as reality as long as we believe in it. This is simply identified as self deception in our key verse. Why? Belief does not change a delusion to reality. A person who pursues illusion, gains delusion and invariably heads for self destruction. That is the first cause of emptiness for men (used generically). God wants us to be weary of self deceptive lifestyle. Biologically or physiologically, no boy becomes a girl because of dress, pills or surgery. Carnal knowledge with people of same gender is not consistent with nature and sense. Basing our lives and hopes on empty grounds of trust is like building a fortress on an island of floating weeds.
In 1895, Leadville, Colorado hosted a huge carnival having made history by building large ice palace, first of its kind ever in America. They did it with the trust that it will make a good tourist attraction and boost the town's sagging economy. Unfortunately, in just 3 months, the palace started melting away — and so melted with it the pride and hopes of Leadville. That is why the clause “let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself” is a timelyand timeless entreaty for us. And of course, its subordinate clause suggests the obvious logical conclusion: “For emptiness will be his reward.” So, you see why we feel empty, disappointed and shattered?! The counsel is simple and clear: Do not put your trust in who you are, what you have, and what others have —otherwise you’re trusting in vanity. Know that all men are sinful, frail, and prone to failure. “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man” (Ps 118:8).
Quote for the Day: "Belief does not change a delusion to reality. A person who pursues illusion, gains delusion and invariably heads for self destruction.“ (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Gracious God, please purge my heart of self trust. Drive away the pain of emptiness and help me to trust always in the strength of Your redeeming love, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
