Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, July 20, 2020
Today’s Text: 2 Samuel 10:2-19
Key Verses: 2 Samuel 10:12 (KJV): “Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.”
Life is a battle, and also, in this battle field, there are some more critical battles that each fighter can’t afford to lose. Joab Zeruiah, the nephew of King David and the commander of his army had fought many battles and lost none under David. By experience, he knew that this particular battle was a critical one, and whatever happens to it would determine the welfare and safety of the people and their cities. Unfortunately, Joab had no readiness and capacity to face the alliance of nations that were against them. Therefore, he was losing courage. We too are often caught up in situations in which we lose control, or we don’t have it the first place. Wether it is going through spiritual battles, challenges of living, nightmare in parenting, marital crises, financial mess, and/or it is the present lockdown situation; one’s soul can really be weary and needed strength may not be there. But we must hear the voice of Joab echo through centuries to us. We must summon courage and play the men. Not as people playing a role in a drama, that which we are really not; but here, we are called to employ all our inner strength and courage as God’s people to fight manfully for our children.
The moral burden on our generation is a critical battle and it’s also so disheartening, yes but let us summon godly courage and fight it for the sake of our children and our cities. Depravity, terrorism, sexuality, sensuality, materialism, and corruption are waging wars on the very fabrics of our society. The enemies have deployed all forms of battles against us — economic infantry, moral cavalry, and spiritual chariots — but we are more than conquerors because we fight on our knees. We see only victories not victims; grace, not blood. Therefore, we must “be of good courage, and let us play the men.” As God’s men we must behave as such indeed though we feel we lacked physical capabilities. Not by power nor might, but by the help of God’s Spirit, we can be the men. We can do it through Christ who strengthens us. We can be strong and do exploits. We can behave ourselves valiantly and save our children, families, and our cities. Yes, we can, if we play the men of courage. We can if we don’t cower out in the days of battles. We can if we find our Abishai rather than fight alone. We can if we play the men of integrity and gravity. We can if we fight on our knees praying the Lord God of heaven.
Quote for the Day: "The enemies have deployed all forms of battles against us — economic infantry, moral cavalry, and spiritual chariots — but we are more than conquerors because we fight on our knees. We see only victories not victims; grace, not blood.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear God, lift me up by the might of Your Spirit. Encourage me with Your presence. Help me to fight not with the strokes of my sword, but with stillness in Your presence so I may know that indeed You are God; in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
