Today’s Text: Psalm 99:1-9
Key Verses: Psalm 99:1 (KJV): “The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.”
We tremble and stagger for the wrong things and reasons, don’t we? Sometimes we don’t even understand the reasons we are afraid so that we simply call it fear of the unknown. Yet it’s a valid fear. But, through God’s word, today, we are pointed to a reason the whole course of creation should justifiably be afraid, which indeed is reverent rather than slavish fear. When we picture, with David, the incredible fact that the God who created heaven and earth is present with us, to protect His people and punish His enemies; should people not be moved fear?! Why would David call on entire creation to tremble before God? Retracing his original word is key to a most correct answer. The original word translated "tremble," properly signifies to be moved or thrown into awe. It is the same root with beingpfly moved to worship. Hence, once again, God is calling our attention to unfolding significance of worshiping Him.
This is not just a call to the church because indeed all the people of earth are subject to the creator. As powerful as some kings are, they have not been able to unravel the One who reigns over all the earth. Should As versatile as science is, it finds no explanation of, for or against God. So should we not fear and worship Him for these reason and more? — For governing His children with so much grace and the world with great providence? For sending His rain and shining His Sun over all, despite the wickedness of our world. It’s quite interesting that some translators rendered the word tremble as rage. But could it be an oxymoron? Because people are already enraged and opposed to God in/by every standard. And that’s why, having no justification before Him (God), we need this call to return to His fear. We need to embrace His grace instead of our rage against His word. We need to receive His tender mercies instead of His judgement. That indeed is what trembling before Him looks like.
Quote for the Day: "Worship begins with a soul serious, sincere and spiritual sense of the Divine Majesty, followed by submission and surrender to Him.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me a heart that fear you. Let each bow before you be in acknowledging you as my Lord and Savior. I surrender my heart to you, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
