Today’s Text: Psalm 131:1-3
Key Verses: Psalm 131:3 (KJV): “Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.”
In such difficult times of crisis, such as coronavirus pandemic, what is hope to you? Is it just some blind optimism, or sitting on the sidelines wishing things would improve; or giving up and shirking from daring? No, but hope is that seed within the fiber of our heart which insists that despite all evidences indicating that quitting is rational, we still shouldn’t quit. Alexander the Great demonstrated great hope when he was setting out on his conquest of Asia. To make sure that his soldiers would not be troubled over families’ civilians matters, he distributed crown estates among them. When he had thus disposed of nearly all, his friend General Perdiccas asked what he had reserved for himself. "Hope," answered the king. That what hope does. It is trusting when things are unbecoming; otherwise, it would be a mere pious platitude.
One way or the other, we have all been, and are being, failed by human trusts; but we have such abundant reasons to trust in the Lord. We have never been failed by God. He has proven faithful and true for/in all ages. In Psalm 130:7 David explains why Israel should hope in the LORD. He says for with the LORD, there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. If you put your hope in a man, you’d be disappointed when you need help most. But like historical Israel, all spiritual Israel may safely trust in the Lord in/with whom “hope maketh not ashamed” (Romans 5:5). Our charge today is therefore to be strong and well-grounded in trustful reliance on God — that no promise He made to us will ever be broken. No matter the dryness, hope tells us that our roses will bloom again. Until we have such confidence, we cannot be said to have hope, and the enemy will rob us of our triumph.
Quote for the Day: "Hope in God gives us victory over delusions of our senses — sight, feeling, and hearing; and against reason, offers assurance of God's providence.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, as I continue through this day, help me look to Jesus, my Hope of glory. Let me find strength in Him. Let me give Him all my worries, fears, struggle and every strength, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
