Today’s Text: Jeremiah 9:22-26
Key Verses: Jeremiah 9:24 (KJV) — “But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.”

Having laid the folly of boasting in vanity, before all, the prophet Jeremiah now pulls up a new case for anyone, if at all, who must ever boast. His prophetic counsel must have gained immense attraction to Apostle Paul in his writing to believers of the New Testament milieu. Obviously, humanity simply fails to learn from errors of past generations; and so, what has been is what still is, what is will be again, and there has been and shall be no new things under heaven. Therefore, before we judge the Jews or the Corinthians, what about us? In what ways are you also personally estimating your wisdom, greatness and accomplishments in light of God’s providence. The Jews prided themselves in their national peace and prowess, the Corinthians prided themselves in the value of their philosophies, Americans in their historical pride and wealth, and many Christians in their popularity and success. A friend and brother of mine, a fellow citizen of Ijagbo city, Dr. Gideon Olumide Akanbi, having worked hard to bag the doctoral degree, would not but proudly designate his achievement as “a trophy of grace.“ I hereby congratulate and celebrate him, and dedicate this devotion to his exemplary gratitude to God.
Wherever we find a similarity or parallel, be it in the warning or in our attitude; the message of the prophet and of Paul is the same. They teach us that glorying in the flesh is not consistent with godliness. Confirming the words of Jeremiah, Jesus, our Lord tells us that “eternal life is to know God” (John 17:3), not to boast in anything we are or have. Jeremiah did not embellish the message like some would do today. He declared it just as he received it: “Let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD... saith the LORD.” Our core charge is: there is nothing we are or have that is not given us from above. "No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.” (John 3:27) And of course, every attribute and achievement we could ever associate with are nothing but imperfect manifestation of the perfect divine endowment in us. Indeed, if we all learn that we belong to the finite, transient and soon ending world, we may have learnt how foolish it is to glory in our knowledge, health, wealth, strength, or in any thing which leaves us under the ego of fleshly lust and of course, the wrath of God. If we have anything to glory about at all, let it always be in our knowledge of God alone.
Quote for the Day: "Glorying in the flesh is not consistent with godliness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please turn us back to the Old Paths where godly men offered up genuine thanksgiving to You for all blessing received; when the smoke of their sacrifices go up to You and bring down aroma of greater divine blessings, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
