Benjamin Franklin, in his autobiography, wrote a profound description of pride. He said: “There is perhaps no one of our natural passions so hard to subdue as pride. Beat it down, stifle it, mortify it as much as one pleases, it is still alive. Even if I could conceive that I had completely overcome it, I should probably be proud of my humility.” Almost all of us probably have various ways and times in which we have been dominated by pride. Most English dictionaries define it as inordinate self-esteem or conceit of one’s own superiority in anything — talents, beauty, wealth, accomplishments, rank or elevation in office, which manifests itself often in contempt of others or lack of reverence to God. But in today’s Scripture “Let” diary, God turns His searchlight on the life of mighty Nebuchadnezzar, whom He helped and raised to become a monument of power and riches by Divine grace; but was humiliated [by God] because he puffed up in pride.
When God blesses, favors and promotes you, and the enemy tempts you to puff up; remember Nebuchadnezzar whose greatness and splendor were such a feat. He reigned over the greatest kingdom of the then known world, and had supreme power among earthly kings and dominion. Until his military glory got to his head and pumped his pride and he began to deem himself something more than man, and imagine himself a demi-god. Shouldn’t our outward prosperity touch and move us for inner transformation? Should our physical luxury stifle our spiritual being? We must remember Jonah’s deceitful sunshine and the false trust in shade — a deadly worm is always at the root. Pride is always a deceitful sunshine. It gets a man stranded in an unexpected dusk. Pride made Nebuchadnezzar who had thought himself to be more than man or equal to God actually became less than man — a beast until he humbled himself before God. O how today’s text reminds us that pride goes before a fall. “...That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." (James 4:6) Therefore, “humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10)
Quote for the Day: "Pride is always a deceitful sunshine. It gets a man stranded in an unexpected dusk.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, deliver me from the desire of being loved, extolled, and adored. Grant me the grace to esteem others more than myself, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
