Today’s Text: Matthew 5:33-37
Key Verses: Matthew 5:37 (KJV) — “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
The original word used to depict evil in this text was most certainly used deliberately by the Lord to show or teach us the gravity of a life not trustworthy. Jesus taught us to pray our Heavenly Father to “deliver us from evil” or “from the evil one.” His choice of words here is because lying and deceit comes from the evil one and father of lies, the devil. Whenever we are ruled by fleshly devices, and we seek to manipulate others into believing a lie, we swear oaths to cohearse believability. But we are taught today that such manipulative oath taking is not from Him who is the Truth. In John 8:44, Jesus makes it clear that if you live a lie, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
If you are pure, right and true, you do not have to resort to profane swearing for people to believe you. In fact, the opposite is true because profane swearing is a proof of a fallen life; and to drag God’s name into our flimsy and clumsy life an evidence of depraved spirit. People won’t believed you because you swears to a matter; they will because of your character. Show me a man who enjoy oath to push a matter, and I will tell you that you’ve seen a man who is on a mission to color a false speech. In this text, our Lord both cautions as well as commands us to let a simple “Yes or No” suffice us when affirming our truth. Anything beside this transparent simplicity is false, untruth and evil. Any believer who yields this world lives as salt and light and exemplifies exceeding righteous life becoming of a true follower of the Truth Himself.
Quote for the Day: "If you are pure, right and true, you do not have to resort to profane swearing for people to believe you.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Spirit of the Lord God Almighty, come afresh upon me: baptize and immerse me in Your truth, so that I will become a more effective witnesses of Your Truth. Jesus is the Truth, and it is in His most Precious name I pray. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
