Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, September 13, 2020
Today’s Text: Matthew 5:38-42
Key Verses: Matthew 5:40 (KJV) — “And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.”
We no longer need to think too deep or search too far to find something to worry about today. The world we live in is simply a troubled one. Wherever one turns: whether to the news rooms or community, to politicians or religious people, or even to one’s own friends and family; there is somehow somewhere something waiting that’s able or ready to cause a heartbreak or hurt. But we are not alone. When our Lord walked the earth, he knew what was in man. He lived among people who tried to use, and take the best of Him. He led a bunch of people who are so troubled. He came from people who did not receive Him. He related with a closest friend who denied Him; and He had another friend who ate with Him in the same plate and yet betrayed Him.
O how true it is that we do not have a High Priest who is not touched by the feelings of our infirmities! He feels everything that we can today. And that is why he can, and had to charge us to “Let not your heart be troubled.” (John 14:1) However, to make sure we enjoy the peace that He gives, and so that we do not cooperate with the enemy in losing that peace or causing us heartbreak; our Lord, in today’s text, counsels us to be ready to suffer any injury that can be borne for the sake of peace, for the sake of casting our burdens to the Lord, and for the sake of following in His steps. He encourages us to avoid disputing, striving and revenge. It’s easy for us to find excuses for the flesh, claiming that flesh and blood cannot put up with cheating. We are also quick to say that our spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. But we must remember three truths: He was in the flesh as we are; flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; and the words that Jesus speaks to us is so that we may have peace.
Quote for the Day: "Compulsion is a major cause of hurt. Our generation hates and reject it. Christians submission is unbroken even when indiscriminately compelled.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me to be gentle as you, and let this mind be in me which also is in You — I pray all these in Your most precious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
