Today’s Text: Matthew 8:18-22
Key Verses: Matthew 8:22 (KJV) — “But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.”

Whereas our generation has been driven by multitude, what we find in scripture has been consistent of the fact that God is never moved by multitude. Obviously, Jesus did not come to earth to build any Tower of Babel. He was not bothered by popularity, nobility or notoriety as many of us today. He needed to reach and save the whole world, but He chose the simplicity of building the character of a few men who will reach all. He knows, and is teaching us that what qualifies a person for the noble position of discipleship are his real spiritual outlook, condition and readiness to follow; not some spur or sentiment. We must learn from Jesus’ figure of speech to this man. He desires to follow Christ wherever He goes, but he is not spiritually ready. He needs to stop, sit down and count the cost. We do need to do the same. Israel’s army does not admit a man who has an unsettled civilian affair like marriage, funeral or debt.
Likewise, a soldier of Christ must understand that the pathway is sacrificial all the way. No worldly honor, on the cross, is promised to crown the journey. The believer’s vocation is not one that may be so hurriedly chosen because of the nature of his job qualification — “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me;” the job description — “a servant is not greater than his master;” and the job condition — “foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. Friends, zeal and high-sounding words are not always a proof of a heart deeply devout. We are not called to follow Jesus only for what He has to offer; but mostly for who He is. We serve an omniscient God who knows innermost motives. Therefore, if you are not as dead to your unsettled matter, you may as well go ahead and bury your dead.
Quote for the Day: "We are not called to follow Jesus only for what He has to offer; but mostly for who He is.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Father in heaven, help me like Elisha, to break the yokes, burn the oxens, put all unsettled matters of life behind, and follow you, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
