God’s “Let” Diary (Part 99) — Let Him Die the Death

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, September 21, 2020

Today’s Text: Matthew 15:1-20

Key Verses: Matthew 15:4 (KJV) — “For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.”

In a bid to rearchitect a new gospel for the so called new creation reality, many young and inexperienced believers today have been led into believing that our Lord Jesus Christ, like the Pharisees and Sadducees of His days, thinks lightly and teaches us to think lightly of some Laws and commandments. But we can be grateful that scriptures leave no stone unturned; and our Lord did not failed to clarify every shaded matter — beyond doubts. In this text, He places emphasis on the continued import of what was delivered by Moses in the law. We must come to appreciate that all scriptures are given by God, and that not a single one of it falls to the ground regardless of time, season or chance. The difference between the Old Testament and the New is their focus: the Old places emphasis mostly on God’s justice and holiness, the New focus on His mercy and love. God does not change, and neither does His word.

Our Lord will not have us be like the hypocrites that pretend devotion in the face of parental duties. We are not to pay attention only to the things that are convenient for us otherwise we’d be making the commands of God of no effect. Thus, our today’s text reveals that in the mind of Christ, consequences for breaking the laws are still there. In the Laws, we are to honor father and mother, which means to obey, speak kindly to, reverence, and think well of. But Jesus interprets it conversely: To curse is to disobey, swear at or speak ill of, treat with irreverence, think evil of in the heart, or do any evil to a parent. This evil is punished by death in the law given by Moses. And Jesus here upholds both the law and the consequence of disobeying it — Anyone who breaks the law should die the death. This is the same as saying, "let him surely die." This is a two in one revelation for us: first, it reveals that Christ our Lord, quoting words of Deuteronomy 5:16 and Exodus 21:17, as He always do, is versatile in the Law. Second, Jesus is consistent and true to His world that He did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17).

Quote for the Day: "Except when in violation to divine authority; no other time will narrowing, despising or denigrating hierarchy or superior authorities be ever consistent with godliness.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to honor my parents and anyone in that honorable role and position in my life. Bless me to be a source of joy and blessings for them, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
