Great Light has Dawned

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, December 23, 2021

Today’s Text: Isaiah 9:1-7

Key Verses: Isaiah 9:2 (NIV): “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

What can best describe our world? Is there any description better than the fact that it is overwhelmed by ruthless darkness. Why are there so much terrorism and merciless wars? Why so much moral burdens and social stigmatization? These are all marks of a world that is ridden with darkness. Such pervasive darkness that is capable of making a prosperous land barren; and cast the shadow of death over the people. But the birth of Christ has inaugurated a new order that fulfills this unstoppable spiritual prophecy. No matter our spiritual condition, the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord gives us newness and freedom from all darkness. Jesus came to liberate us from darkness and all its metaphors—the darkness of this corporeal world is nothing to be compared with the darkness of sin: of which without Christ, all humanity sits in darkness.

The light seem by Isiaiah is all creation’s — i.e., all human generations — trustworthy divine intervention for deliverance. It frees us from physical, political, economic, religious and spiritual miseries. Christ’s light reveals the way of our return to God. Christ’s light reveals the glory of God. It leads us to see God’s eternal love and purpose for all sinful men. With the coming of Christ, true light came to our troubled world for all who embrace His blessings. The figure of speech of light is used because of the abyss of darkness brought upon humanity by the laws of sin and death. Therefore the glorious promise is clear that anyone who comes to the light of Christ will certainly find great light. Would you come to Jesus today?

Quote for the Day: “Our lighted streets, the candlesticks, and the story of the magi and star are prophetic fulfillment of messianic manifestation of light.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for being our light in the dark places of the world and of our lives. You are the light of the world, shine Your light upon us, and spread the lights upon others — in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
