Honor Your Parents (Part One)

Today’s Text: Ephesians 6:1-4

Key Verse: Ephesians 6:2 (ESV) — “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise.

As Americans and the world prepare for this year’s Mother’s Day, we must retrace the shifted scriptural landmark of honoring — not just our mother or father — but our parents. I remember reading a story of a strikingly old woman who had become infirm, suffered from dementia, and had to live with her son’s family for support. One day, during dinner, her daughter-in-law passed her a plate full of food, which dropped from her tremoring hand, spilling the food and breaking the plate. The daughter-in-law, rather than showing compassion, was outraged because her cherished plate was broken. She demanded that her husband buy a plastic plate for his mother so she would not break her fine plates anymore.

Without argument, her husband went ahead and bought two plastic plates; and politely said: “I bought two so we may keep the other plate for you till you get old.” We all have, or have had, parents; and we all may be. Our Lord too had human parents; and honored them. He even honored His mother during His dying moments on the cross, leaving us an example that there is no time too late or when we are too old to honor our parents; or when our parents are too old to be honored. Jesus is our example. His heart was upon His sword-pierced-hearted mother while He was offering the highest sacrifice for sin. How much do you care for your parent(s)? Are you compassionate to them as they grow weaker in strength and mindfulness?

Quote for the Day: “Honoring our parents must be so dear to God's heart that it holds the first place on the second table of the Ten Commandments.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, thank You for the gift of parents. You placed me in their hands to nurture me and provide for me almost throughout life. O how they image Your selfless love, attention, guidance, help, understanding, and wisdom. Help me to love them as they age. Please keep them healthy and strong. Surround them with needed support that will bring them joy, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
