Honor Your Parents (Part Two)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 9, 2021

Today’s Text: Exodus 20:1-18

Key Verse: Exodus 20:12 (KJV) — “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”

No matter how young or old we are, we are obligated to honor our parents. This is not just an Old Testament Commandments; but it is also founded in the theology of the New Testament. There is no getting around it. Honor as used in both Testaments covers a wide range of things. It means treating our parents with due respect and dignity. It refers to providing for them wether in need or not. Honoring one’s parent is a demonstration of one’s recognition of the fact that they are God’s gift to us. It is not a choice. It is a command.

St. Paul brought another dimension to the command. He admonished Ephesian believers (6:1-3) to obey their parents in the Lord, for this is right. Whereas some has interpreted this to mean that the apostle here disadvantaged unbelieving parents; but when one considers his reiteration on the exact words of today’s key text, it becomes clear that he was simply making sure no one excludes other men and women who has spiritual parental responsibilities over us, or are old enough to be one’s parents. He reminds us that the commandment cones with a promise.

Honoring our parents is obeying them.A child never outgrows parental care. We must remember how we have learnt obedience, not rebellion, at our very young age. We must continue in parental teaching to live under authority: obeying and respecting others. Following Christ, we are expected to learn submission and obedience. And no one should doubt that parents are truly worthy of honor. Let us respecting them and their opinions. Let us treat them with dignity.

Many Christians haven’t any idea how to obey God because they grew up disobeying their parents and hating authority. Fortunately, we can turn things around by surrendering our lives to Christ and obeying His Word. one that honors our parents. It can even take a heart that has been hurt and damaged by parents who neglected us and restore it to one of love and forgiveness. If you are struggling with honoring your parents take it to the Lord today and ask him to do a work in your heart.

Quote for the Day: “A life in the Lord is already molded to honor and obey. Through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit , rebellious heart is melted and obedient spirit replaces it.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, bless our parents and help us to love and obey our parents. Please keep them healthy and strong. And surround them with needed support all the days of their life, in Jesus' name. Amen.

I wish you all a happy Mother’s Day with all my love and prayer,
