Hope at the Scent of Water

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Today’s Text: Job 14:7-14

Key Verses: Job 14:7 (ESV) ““For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.”

I have shared this inspiring story of Alexander the Great before. He was setting out on his conquest of Asia. He wanted to ensure that his soldiers would not be troubled over the welfare of their dependents during their absence, so he distributed royal estates and revenues among them. When he had thus disposed of nearly all the royal resources, one of his Generals by the name Perdiccas asked what he had reserved for himself. "Hope," answered the king. "In that case," said Perdiccas, "we who share in your labors will also take part in your hopes." He then refused the estate allotted to him, and several other of the king's friends did the same. Hope means more than having it all good. It means more than seeing or sharing crowns. Often, hope actually is real when you get to share a thorny crown. Hope is seeing the ray of light from the distance when things look so vague. It is when everything is unbecoming; when a matter appears unrewarding; or a goal is not forthcoming, and a reward seems not possible. During these times, hope begins to be a strength.

Many of us claim we have hope when the strength of our character has not been tried. Whereas standing in hooe is one of our acid tests of our Christian character and faith. Today, God is saying to someone: no matter how bad the situation seems, remember our great examples from the Scripture. There is always hope if you believe. Whatever the case maybe, remember David and many other patriarchs of faith. They fell into hopeless errors, but trusting God, they found grace at the end. Job and Jeremiah got to the deep end of the ocean and even cursed their birthdays; yet, by hope, they got through victorious. Elijah desired death. Jonah was weary of life. However, both men set us an examples of the strength that comes from our weaknesses when we anchor our hope in God. Regardless of how lowly you feel; or how hopeless the situation, there is always a scent of water. No matter how badly cut down that tree is for you, be strengthened in hope. It always springs again at the slightest touch with water source. Quit your “out of nothing comes nothing” mentality. scaxaJust leave whatever you could not of yourself produce in the hand of God. No tree produces its own water. Not the holiest of us is more able to change situations by his power any more than the worst of men. This meditation may be your long awaited scent of water. Give hope a chance. There is hope for you. Don’t give up. I see that situation symbolizing your cut down tree yet renewing itself again. I see you reviving and flourishing again. I see your promised spring approaching.

Quote for the Day: No one has ever fallen so low that he may not rise again. No tree has ever been cut so badly that it may not be revived. If there is hope for a tree, there is hope for me.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me true faith: a faith that blossom in hope when the trees are cut down. Please make that faith grow in me day by day into lively hope and love, so that I can be an example to others, in Jesus' name. Bu uhAmen.

With all my love and prayers,
